BoA – Merry-Chri

As we approach the end of our Christmas advent calendar it has been an incredible journey of self-reflection between both classic and modern K-pop, today we take one last trip to the past as we cover the incredible BoA and her legendary song “Merry-Chri“.
Released in 2004, “Merry-Chri” is in fact one of several Christmas songs the musician has released first starting back in 2000 she has featured on a total of 9 SMTOWN Christmas projects including the 2015 ‘Winter Garden’ collection alongside girlgroups f(x) and Red Velvet which we featured on day 19 of the advent calendar.
Her most famous Christmas release, “Merri-Chri” has seen major success both in Korea and Japan, with the single has become immortal currently sitting at number 35 (as of December 23) in the Line Music Top 100 Chart the song has seen two music videos both in Japanese for her 15 year anniversary in 2015 and the Korean version in 2022.
Featuring incredible vocals, the song is the perfect example of a Christmas love song, the passion of the vocals are reminiscent of a K-drama love scene. The use of echo and instrumental are a great reminder and example of K-pops first generation. It’s clear to see why this song is loved and often to referred to as the “All I want for Christmas is you” of Japan.
