It’s the most wonderful time of the year. In Korea, Christmas is a day for friends and family as well as a time for consuming entertainment be it Television or music.

Here, we have chosen our favourite 25 songs released from the world of K-pop ranging from first generation bands to songs released as recently as 2024.

Hyojung – Hot December.

After reviewing one of Korea’s most iconic Christmas songs, we bring you back again to the present day as we dive in and review Oh My Girl member Hyojung and her Christmas song “Hot December”.

Another year and another quiet year for Oh My Girl; with the departure of Jiho in 2022 and the acquisition of the group’s entertainment company, WM Entertainment, the group have seen an increase in the members’ solo activities.

Debuting in 2016 as part of the ‘Fantastic’ OST with “When Autumn Comes”, Hyojung has quickly established herself as a successful solo star in South Korea, appearing on various OST’s, most famously the Disney film ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’, her solo singles have often featured collaborations with fellow Oh My Girl members and solo stars. Hot December comes as Hyojung’s major solo release consisting of just her and aims to reward fans and bring festive cheer.

Starting with a beautiful jingle Christmas, it was nice to see this take a twist on the traditional beat change. Sampling the audio from the beginning as a beat for the song, incorporate different instruments and beats to make the song.

Admittedly not an expert on Oh My Girl’s recent music, it was nice to see Hyojung experiment with “Hot December” and use aspects of RnB and rap as opposed to the overpowering vocals you would expect from a K-pop vocalist.

“Hot December” provides a perfect, relaxed sound, something that many K-pop Christmas songs fail to do. At the time of year when work can feel tedious, and motivation is becoming harder, Hyojung provides an enjoyable and catchy song that can easily be listened to in the background of a long day at work.
