JYP Nation – Last Christmas

One of the best things about Christmas is the togetherness that it brings, whether it’s celebrating with family or friends. Christmas is always better when it is spent with the ones you love.
For many idols, Christmas is mostly celebrated with their family and friends. The lead-up to Christmas is often spent with group members and labelmates. This joining has been one of the reasons for this advent calendar, which celebrates the effort and collaboration of musicians during the holiday period and gives fans the best possible holidays.
No example optimises this collaboration better than JYP Nation‘s “This Christmas“, one of several label Christmas songs expect a couple more of these to feature in the upcoming days and weeks on the rundown to Christmas.
Recorded in 2010, the song features artists from the golden era of JYP entertainment. It features the likes of Suzy, San-E, JYP himself, 2PM and many more, providing a perfect nostalgia trip for all second-generation K-pop fans.
The song itself does really flow well, something which only could have taken ages to master and produce given the contrasting number of voices and styles in the song. However, whether it is the business of the track or the actual lyrics, the track feels like it’s missing something and, apart from a few killer verses from some extremely talented artists, lacks true cohesion and narrative and rather relies heavily on its nostalgia factor.
Overall, while nothing spectacular for fans of a certain age or those looking to explore K-pop’s previous eras, this song is a perfect introduction and throwback to a bygone era. Let’s hope we can get an updated version of the song with many of the company’s new and great stars.
