2022 saw the emergence of what had previously been seen as an underrepresented genre K-band (Korean band music). With already established bands such as N.Flying, FTIsland and most recognisably DAY6, making waves signing for renowned K-pop entertainment companies. The genre saw a big boost through the show Great Seoul Invasion in July and two seasons of Superband in 2019 and 2021.
The shows have introduced a range of new bands to International audiences, seeing the genre grow with one label in particular receiving attention for their acts. Such as Great Seoul Invasion winners TOUCHED and up-and-coming sensations Yudabinband. The show also saw the appearance of the band Lacuna, whose beautiful looks and aesthetics made the band a favourite of both judges and audiences alike.
One year after their appearance on Great Seoul Invasion and their shortly followed up 4th EP Summer Tales. The band are back with their second release of 2023 as they look to continue their success from a jam-packed schedule that has also seen them perform on some of Korea’s biggest independent rock stages.
The song starts with strong electronic guitar riff chords reminiscent of their 2022 summer release, Summer Tales, which similar to their previous summer release, the band opened up on their journey of self-discovery. They change from their journey of love and instead explore a new world of possibilities with less stress and escape the fast nature of life we all get caught up in. The heavy guitar solos and heavily pulsing drums add a sense of urgency, matching the song’s lyrics about the need for a new start. “Summer Cosmos” is the perfect representation of the busy schedule and nature the band is used to.
Overall, “Summer Cosmos” sees Lacuna utilise what they do best and use the power of their incredible guitar abilities and drumming to create a clean and authentic sound that perfectly aligns with the vocals of Jang Kyungmin. Who serves not only as the song’s vocalist, writer and composer but also as a guitarist. His hard work in all of the songs’ aspects of creation has made for an incredibly coordinated release. The arrangement and ability of each member bring the song to life.
