As we approach the halfway point of the year, it has been an incredible year in the world of K-pop and as we approach the summer, where most of K-pop’s greatest songs are released. Many K-pop artists have tried their luck to find that early summer success and vibes before the summer months. Today we turn up the heat and say hello to summer and the second half of 2023.
1 – Aespa – Welcome to my world
In their first comeback since July 2022, Aespa would start the month of May strong after a reported delayed release due to the ongoing issues with the SM Entertainment takeover. This comeback comes as a statement for both SM Entertainment and Aespa, to show that SM Entertainment and Aespa are still here and better than ever in a burgeoning era of girl group dominance.
Featuring an electronic instrumental, Aespa continues to introduce fans to the cinematic universe they have been creating, with this marking the introduction to season two of the SM Culture Universe. The song’s lyrics and the music video imagery connect fans to a new world with AI. The song features AI character nævis and enhanced electronic vocals in a powerful release, proving they are here and better than ever.
2 – Woo Yerin – Red Rose
Our first and only solo artist to feature as part of this month’s list. Former Kpop Star 5 contestant made her first comeback of 2023 through the form single “Red Rose.”
Known for her incredible vocals, Woo Yerin showcases her angelic sweet, bubble-pop style, all about love at first sight.
3 – BTOB – Wind and wish
Known for their incredible vocals, it seems that BTOB can perform any style of song showcased across their 12 mini-albums.
BTOB showcase their vocals in this release. Whether it’s strong, individual vocals in verses or the pitch-perfect harmonisation in the chorus, their lyrics of love togetherness are enough to make you fall in love with the group. Whilst their infectious chorus is enough to make you shout “WAW,” no one does it quite like BTOB.
4 – N.flying – Blue Moon
Debuting eight years ago this month. N.Flying celebrated its anniversary in a fan tribute single titled, “Blue Moon.” Also marking their last full-member release before both members Dongsung and Jaehyun enlist this month, and Cha Hun set to enlist in March. The song comes as a perfect thank you and goodbye for now for all fans.
The group open up about their experience as idols, with Blue Moon referring to the fanbase the song is all about thanking N.Fia for helping them pursue their careers and success. Their music video shows gratitude with a range of videos, from a fun day out footage to old footage of the band’s early days as idols and live performance video the song is made for all N.Fia.
5 – KARD – ICKY
In arguably one of the best albums of the year so far, KARD has once again pushed out the boat, and after making their name known with major success in Latin America. The Co-Ed group have turned their attention to Korea and attempting to find a way to express male and female relationships and love in their songs expressing a sexiness not typically found in K-pop. In an interview with JoongAng Daily, they expressed how they wanted the song to feel “like you’re listening to a man and a woman talking to each other.”
The album is one to fully be listened to with songs from both the male and female line and b-sides “CAKE” and “Without You,” the album has something for everyone.
